Facts about Topaz
  • Opened: September 11, 1942

  • Closed: October 31, 1945

  • Original name: Central Utah Relocation Center, "Topaz" derived from mountain 9 miles away

  • Location: 140 miles southwest of Salt Lake, 16 miles NW of the town of Delta.

  • Climate: Desert, from 106 degrees in the summer to 30 degrees below in the winter

  • Cost to build: $3,929,000

  • Internees: 8130, primarily from the San Francisco Bay area

  • Size: 19,900 acres, 623 buildings

  • Living area: 1 sq mile, 42 blocks, surrounded by barbed wire and guard towers

  • Block: 12 barracks per block, housing 250-300 internees plus mess hall, bath house/laundry, recreation hall

  • Living space: 16ft x 20ft to 20ft x 25ft, 4-6 persons per room

  • Assembly Center: Tanforan Race Track, San Bruno Ca. Internees spent up to 6 months living in horse stalls waiting for Topaz to be completed.
